Music Review: Lil Tjay’s “Destined 2 Win”

by Jacob Tiller

Rapper Lil Tjay recently released his second studio album titled “Destined 2 Win.” The album contains 21 songs and eight artist features.

“Destined 2 Win” spans multiple genres and can be considered Rap, R&B, Hip-Hop or Soul music. The songs are diverse and listeners will find at least one song of high value to them.

Lil Tjay, who is 19-years old, is one of the more familiar faces of the TikTok generation.

One of the things that makes Lil Tjay an exciting artist is his appeal to people in his same age group. Teenagers feel like they are growing up with him because of the passion and emotion he shows in his songs.

In “Destined 2 Win,” you will hear Tjay sing about his relationships, rags-to-riches stories or manifestations of his destiny.

The opening song, also called “Destined 2 Win,” sets a tone of greatness and the stage for Tjay. It explores his past, present and future which all become more clear as the album continues.

The next song is “Born 2 Be Great.” This song is one of my favorites because it effectively accomplishes Tjay’s goals to illustrate his personal journey and “manifest his destiny.”

The most popular song on the album is the third track, “Calling My Phone.” The song has racked up more than 200 million plays on Spotify because of its relatability and the second-verse collaboration with popular rapper 6lack.

Later in the album is the song “Love Hurts,” which  features rapper/hip-hop artist Toosii. This proved to be one of the most powerful songs on the album for me to listen to when I have to let go of my feelings for someone I love.

Next up is “Run It Up,” where Lil Tjay, Offset, and Moneybagg Yo all give an outstanding performance. The music website Genius called this track a “melodic track touching on their individual lifestyles with fame and wealth.”

My absolute favorite part of the album is the collection of bonuses he added at the end: “Losses,” “Move On,” and “None of Your Love” respectively.

All three of the bonus songs, especially “Losses,” which has received 700 plays from myself alone, certifies “Destined 2 Win” as one of the best albums of 2021.

As young as Lil Tjay is, he can change the future of hip-hop and become one of the greatest rappers of all-time if he continues on his current path.
