The Epic News Network and The Comet were awarded highest honors in the Oklahoma Scholastic Media’s Critical Service award category for this school year. This award is given to online and print publications that receive the highest points in a holistic review of the publications by a media professional.

This is the first year for Epic to enter the print magazine category with its new student-produced semesterly magazine, The Comet. The magazine features the works of students in the Desktop Publishing, Intro to Journalism and photography classes. A new edition of The Comet is in production now and will arrive in the mailboxes of Epic families in June.

The Comet swept the Magazine Page Design Category with three student-produced page designs. The ENN Editorial staff won second and third place with their front cover and inside page designs. The Tulsa VLC journalism class took first place with the inside page spread, Multitasking. The story featured pictures and articles about the off-campus hobbies of Epic VLC students.

ENN junior Jensen McKey also took home first place in the News Story, Education category for her reporting on Epic’s new Native American Languages program. You can read her story here about the program that aims to revitalize endangered languages.

The individual awards put Epic student journalists in direct competition with student journalists from schools around the state.
